A two-hour procedure to improve breast shape and reduce size.
A large bust, although often romanticised, is often more of a burden for the body than a blessing. Those with large breasts commonly complain of back, neck pain and regular headaches. Women have been known to experience permanent indentation on their shoulders due to the constant pressure of strained bra straps. Many women also complain of skin issues and infections under the breast crease and daily skin irritation. Alongside the physical pain come social problems, the inability to find a bra that fits correctly AND still looks attractive, finding a swimsuit that is supportive and flattering, and difficulties finding clothing that fits in a complementary manner. A large bust also gives the illusion of bulk, even if the frame of the body is quite small.
The weight of large breasts is also a concern when it comes to skin ageing and elasticity. Women with larger cup sizes often complain of droopy breasts as their skin is under constant strain due to the weight of their bust.
A breast reduction is possibly one of the most rewarding of all breast procedures. Patients who have healed from surgery have new confidence; they live a more physically comfortable life with improvements to posture and access to more varieties of exercise such as jogging or activities involving fast-paced movement. Women who undergo breast reduction surgery also often go through a visual metamorphosis with new access to fashion and new confidence in their appearance, often choosing to try clothing they have never tried before. A change in body proportions can do wonders for a woman’s sense of self.
Breast reduction surgery is a common procedure and very popular with many The Doctor’s Studio patients. Dr Topchian performs breast reduction procedures in both Melbourne and Brisbane. Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, permanently reducing bulk and also improving the overall shape of the breast. Due to the amount of tissue in a larger chest, a breast reduction results in a firm and full smaller cup size with most patients choosing to become a full C cup or D cup. The Doctor’s Studio uses the vertical scar technique, a procedure that results in a lower likelihood of scarring and the most extended duration of effect. The vertical scar technique involves a fine incision from the centre of the underbust crease to the nipple and allows the best lift and also the repositioning of the nipple. This can also be combined with a nipple reduction should the patient desire it.
Breast reduction surgery is performed in a licensed day hospital with a general anaesthetic, generally talking about two hours to complete. No drainage tubes are required in most circumstances with patients returning to work within a week depending on their personal experiences of pain. Following surgery, patients are provided with a healing laser treatment at The Doctor’s Studio to assist with scar fading and reduce swelling and any bruising. Most patients find scars are faded within three months, although they may last for up to a year, depending on skin type. On some occasions, a second surgery may be required to help with scar tissue or noticeable difference between the two breasts, but this is rare.
Liposuction is an alternative to breast reduction surgery that can, in the right circumstances, reduce breast size by a cup size on average. Liposuction is most suited to older women (who have a higher fat percentage in the breast). As with all surgeries, Dr Topchian will be able to discuss with you your desired outcome and suggest the relevant procedure based on your body type, medical history and body goals. The main benefit of liposuction for breast reduction is minimal scarring and a quick recovery. However, the amount of fat that can be removed, and therefore the amount of volume that the breast can be reduced, cannot be predicted before surgery.
Breast reduction surgery may be subsidised by Medicare and health insurance, depending on your provider. For those experiencing health problems due to their breast size, a referral from a GP or physiotherapist can also help with this process; please discuss this with Dr Topchian during your consultation. An all-inclusive surgical and recovery package costs $11,800 with payment plans available. Dr Topchian has performed hundreds of breast reduction surgeries and is an experienced cosmetic surgeon who achieves beautiful results.
