Top 5 Reasons Why Cosmetic Surgery Can Improve Confidence

Using cosmetic surgery to balance or improve your physical appearance has been proven to offer many psychological benefits such as boosting self-esteem and confidence. Here, we look at some of the reasons why.

1. Improving Physical Impairments
Undergoing cosmetic surgery to resolve physical impairments can significantly improve one’s quality of life and resolve a range of issues. For example, breast hypertrophy is a condition that creates a functional disability in both men and women due to disproportionate upper body weight.

Breast reduction surgery is becoming more and more popular and can greatly change the lives of people who suffer from a range of issues. A breast reduction can be performed to relieve discomfort associated with large breasts such as back, neck and shoulder pain or poor posture. Undergoing a breast reduction can not help to relieve this pain but can also greatly increase confidence and many women after surgery have said they are able to wear items they didn’t feel comfortable in before, like workout wear or swimwear and they can now partake in physical activity.

Similarly, men with overdeveloped or enlarged breasts (gynaecomastia) can experience significant emotional anxiety and will avoid partaking in physical activity or sexual intimacy. Undergoing a male breast reduction can enhance their self-esteem and social confidence.

2. Reconstruction
Reconstruction surgery can be performed to treat a range of medical conditions such as breast cancer, skin burns, cleft lip palate or skin cancer. One of the most common forms of cosmetic reconstructive surgery is a breast reconstruction which can be performed on patients who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy. This may involve the surgical insertion of a breast implant or the transfer of tissue, skin and muscle from another part of the body to the chest.

Reconstruction surgery can considerably improve self-confidence as it symbolises a moment when an individual moves on from an illness they were faced with and progresses towards an active and healthy life.

3. Cosmetic Improvements
Cosmetic surgery has helped individuals who have wanted to improve a body part that causes them distress or embarrassment. Procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction and rhinoplasty are performed to address a wide range of insecurities for individual reasons, however, the most common is dissatisfaction in size. Cosmetic surgery can provide patients with their own desired body shape or facial look, leading them to live a more social, confident and happy lifestyle.

4. Excessive Weight Loss
People who have experienced excessive weight loss can be left with unwanted, sagging skin, causing them to be hesitant to show their bodies to others even after achieving their ideal body weight. An abdominoplasty or ‘tummy tuck’ removes loose skin from the abdomen and tightens separated muscles, to create a slimmer and smoother shape.

5. Looking Younger
Some of the least invasive cosmetic procedures are botox and dermal fillers and these are given through injections. Botox and dermal fillers are temporary facial treatments and can help individuals attain a more youthful appearance. Botox temporarily freezes facial muscles, commonly in the forehead or eyes, which then reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions such as smiling or frowning. Alternatively, dermal fillers are injected below the skin’s surface in order to add volume and give a plumper look. Common areas that can get injected with dermal filler are lips, the under eye area, nose and the chin. Changes are noticeable within a couple days of treatment and do not require any recovery, unlike other cosmetic procedures.

In summary, although cosmetic surgery may seem like a big commitment, modifying any physical imperfections or impairments can significantly improve your quality of life, and in turn your physical and social wellbeing.
