How Safe Are Breast Implants?

FAQ: Are Breast Implants Safe?
One of the number one concerns women have when it comes to breast implants is whether they are safe. A number of factors come into play here, including the history, studies of the implants, and potential risks.

History and Studies
Breast implants have been around since 1963, and are probably the most studied medical device in history. There were concerns about 20 years ago about the safety of silicon in the body, but many studies since have shown it to be safe. It will not cause or accelerate any diseases.

Progress
About 10 years ago, gel implants came onto the market, and these were different to the existing silicon implants because they had a gel inside, rather than a liquid silicon like the old ones that had the thin shell. These new ones are much more durable.

Risks
As with all types of surgery, Breast Implants do involve a level of risk, such as infection, pain, changes to your sensation, and further surgeries. Rupture can also occur in some women, although this is significantly reduced with recent progress in implants. Capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms and hardens around the implant, can also occur, but this is also quite rare with newer types of implants.

Summary
Breast implants have not been shown to cause or progress any diseases, and silicon is not known to be dangerous in the body. If you choose an experienced cosmetic surgeon who uses the latest technology and implant materials, it is unlikely that you will experience complications.
