A breast lift involves a two-hour operation called a mastopexy. This procedure is for when the nipple is below the breast crease (ptosis) and can be combined with implants for a rounder, fuller look.

Dr David Topchian offers breast lift surgery consultations in our Melbourne and Brisbane practices. He has performed hundreds of these breast lift procedures, with minimal scarring and excellent long-term shape retention.

What causes changes in a breast’s shape? What causes changes in a breast’s shape?

There are many unavoidable reasons why a woman’s breast will change over time. For example, as we age and gravity takes hold, breasts will naturally start to sag. Other factors that may contribute to less voluminous breasts include breastfeeding, pregnancy, genes and fluctuations in weight.

What type of scars could I expect to have after a breast lift? What type of scars could I expect to have after a breast lift?

You can expect a vertical scar down from the bottom of the areolar/nipple toward the crease under the breast.

These scars usually heal well and fade to a pale, fine line over a year. Some patients do have dark, raised and wide scars. This is unpredictable in general but can often be revised and improved after a few months.

Is there a long recovery after a breast lift? Is it painful? Is there a long recovery after a breast lift? Is it painful?

Breast lifts are performed under a general anaesthetic in a day surgery hospital. You can go home a couple of hours after the operation if you’re feeling alright after a period of observation.

Usually, pain is manageable and can be controlled with standard pain relievers. Drains are not routinely used, and dressings are minimal so that a shower can be taken the day after surgery. Sutures are dissolving, so they do not need to be removed.

There is usually swelling and bruising in the first few weeks as the tissues heal. This settles gradually and is usually minimal by about a month after the operation.

For the first four weeks, a support bra should be worn, and no activities should be undertaken that bounce the breast, such as aerobics or jogging. After this time, you can gradually resume normal activities.
