Why consider Breast Augmentation?

There are two main groups of women who seek breast augmentation: those whose breasts have not developed to their satisfaction, and those who have lost breast volume (through weight loss or pregnancy).

How is Breast Augmentation performed?

Our preferred incision site is in the breast crease (inframammary) because the scar usually heals well and is usually difficult to see.

It leaves no scar on the actual breast itself and does not restrict the type of clothing that can be worn – even if it is still visible.

In general, it is best to place an implant on top of the muscle if there is sufficient breast tissue to cover the implant at the upper part of the breast. Patients who don’t have much tissue in the upper part of the breast will most likely get the best result by having their implant placed partially under the muscle (dual plane) so that the implant has more tissue covering it and is less likely to be seen.

Breast Augmentation is performed in a day hospital under a general anaesthetic.

What are the risks involved?

In general, the risks and complications of Breast Augmentation surgery are:

  • Changes in nipple and breast sensation
  • Asymmetry (one breast appears different in size or shape to the other)
  • Malposition/ displacement (a breast implant moves out of its intended position)
  • Ptosis (sagging of the breast)
  • Encapsulation (hardening of the implants)
  • Wrinkling/rippling
  • Dissatisfaction with the result
  • Additional surgeries
  • Breast/ Nerve Pain

No matter how simple it may seem, every cosmetic procedure or surgery carries risk.
