腹壁整形术 ABDOMINOPLASTY

(Tummy Tuck)

An abdominoplasty – also called a tummy tuck – removes excess skin and fat, tightens muscles and repositions the umbilicus. The scar can usually be placed in the bikini line and, together with the flattening of the abdomen, usually produces a significant improvement.

A mini-abdominoplasty can be performed in either our Melbourne or Brisbane studios and is suitable for people who have a relatively small amount of redundant tissue. An excision of the skin is sufficient to tighten the abdomen. The umbilicus is not affected, and muscles are not usually strengthened as they are not too loose.

The ideal abdominoplasty patient has tight muscles and excess skin and fat. (This may appear as an overhang or ‘apron’.) These patients generally won’t find a sufficient improvement from liposuction alone.

This operation is not a treatment for obesity or being overweight.

What is the recovery like? What is the recovery like?

Most people need to take around one week off work. If your muscles are tightened, recovery can take a few weeks longer. If a mini-abdominoplasty is performed, recovery may take a few days less. Final results are not seen for approximately six to twelve months, with the scars fading over two years or so.

Making the decision to have cosmetic surgery is a serious one, and patients considering a procedure should also keep in mind that they need time to recover, they will need support, and possibly time off work. They may also need other therapies such as massage and compression garments.

During your consultation we will discuss the range of options available to you and recommend treatments that have the best chance of achieving your desired goals. Part of this conversation will cover, in more detail, the types of complications and risks that apply to your specific circumstances. In general, the risks and complications of surgery are:

• disappointing aesthetic outcome
• infection
• bleeding
• scarring
• significant asymmetry (a large difference between sides)
• pain
• change in skin sensation (eg. numbness)
• allergic reaction
• anaesthetic complications
• prolonged recover and wound healing
• collections of fluid

All of these may result in the need for further treatment or surgery.
